Joseph Andrews Vol 1 edition by Henry Fielding Literature Fiction eBooks

Joseph Andrews Vol 1 Henry Fielding's Joseph Andrews is a satire on human nature and the unrealistic best selling 18th Century novels of Samuel Richardson. Richardson's novel most popular work, Pamela, purported to be an account of an assault on a beautiful servant's womanly virtue by her wealthy, rakish employer. She refuses until he offers her marriage which she rapturously accepts.

Joseph Andrews relates the story of her equally stubborn and chaste brother, Joseph. Joseph, like Pamela, is in the employ of an immoral antagonist of rank, Lady Booby.

There are plenty of twists and turns throughout the novel to hold the reader's attention. Fielding calls the reader's attention to issues of status, self-deception and deception, hypocrisy and recognizing truth, while providing plenty of dramatic irony (the reader realizing what a character can't or won't). I won't spoil the story for you other than to say that Fielding was a comic genius as well as a man of action who created London's first modern police force, and a long sitting judge in the criminal justice system. This mix of experiences served him well in both Joseph Andrews- and his more famous work- Tom Jones. Jeff Tedford

Great
An enjoyable book. Fielding is a droll and humane author with wide and deep understanding of people and their motive. The price was right, too! (It cost nothing because it was a public-domain version.)
Joseph Andrews, his beloved Fanny, and his good friend Parson Adams may be three of the most virtuous and pure acting individuals to inhabit a fictional world, yet in this hilarious and satirical novel by Henry Fielding, it is every other character they encounter who acts like they are the truly Christian ones while our three heroes are ridiculed, taunted, villified, arrested, and generally abused by all they meet.
The novel follows the three main characters as they travel around the English countryside, their own honest and well-intentioned actions finding conflict with a variety of thiefs, lovers, judges, parsons, self-declared Christians, and others, who talk the good talk but turn out to be nothing more than selfish, deceptive scoundrels. Parson Adams naivete and belief in the goodness of man continually get the better of him, while Joseph and Fanny's pure and unselfish love finds no sympathy or empathy in practically anyone. In fact, the only sympathetic characters other than these three are those that English "society" would think less of, i.e. beggars, the poor, the less privileged class.
Not only does Fielding expertly critique and satire the values of 18th century England, but he repeatedly and humorously comments on his work as a novelist, pointing out what he is doing to manipulate the emotions of the reader. Alhough the book is at times nothing more than a series of stories within stories (a la "One Thousand and One Arabian Nights") and set pieces, Fielding is aware of this, and points this out to the reader. A surprisingly smart and deft move in a novel written at a time when novels were still relatively new.
Written over 350 years ago, "Joseph Andrews" not only stands the test of time, but still has quite a bit to say about current society and what we view as moral, virtuous, and Christian.
As one of the first true English novels, Joseph Andrews is just as entertaining as it was 300 years ago. Well done Fielding!!!
Brighter minds than mine have reviewed this story, so I'll stick to the formatting. It was relatively glitch free, and readable. Worth the download. Enjoy )
I like Henry Fielding's playful style of writing. His characters and stories are a lot of fun and never boring.
Books from the 1700s and earlier can be a pretty tough read, this book, however, is not. It is a parody of a popular book of the time, "Pamela, or Virtue Rewarded." The author of this book felt that Pamela did not live up to the model of chastity that it was supposed to be. The author, Henry Fielding, claims "The History of the Adventures of Joseph Andrews and of his Friend Mr. Abraham Adams" (as it was originally titled) is a "comic epic poem in prose," is recognizable as a novel by today's standards and resembles a romantic comedy.

The series of books (four in all) follow Joseph Andrews as he tries to reunite with his childhood love, Fanny. In general, women that he meets try to take sexual advances towards him that he is either completely oblivious to or wants to have no part of. He is eventually joined by Abraham Adams, a pastor.
